国家重点工程、世界银行贷款项目湘江株洲航电枢纽工程船闸于2004年12月28日正式通航。据湖南省湘江航运建设开发有限公司负责人介绍，株洲航电枢纽船闸是航电枢纽的通航设施．船闸能一次通过一顶四艘千吨级驳船，总载量高达4000t的大型船队，年设计通过能力1260万t。
