Vanadium microalloyed forged steels solve the lightweight, high performance and low cost issues in some of the key automotive components of powertrain and chassis for modern vehicles and trucks and are widely used in the automotive industry in developed regions such as Europe, Japan and North America Adopted and played an important role in the design of new cars to meet the increasingly demanding requirements on body weight and emission metrics. Developing countries and regions will also use the technology as an important measure for developing a local automotive industry and seeking better engineering solutions. The majority of these forged steels are produced from medium carbon steel with a small addition of vanadium to provide a large amount of precipitation strengthening on the controlled cooling ferrite-pearlite microstructure. This paper introduces the development history of vanadium microalloyed forging steel production technology, metallurgical principle, performance characteristics and typical application of forged steel.
