始于1980年,历时近20年的新编地方志工作已进入尾声,并将揭开下届修志的帷幕.本届修志成果斐然。截止1998年底，全国已出版省、市、县（区）三级志书3400多部（如果把其他类志书计算在内，还远远不止这个数），这在中国方志史、文化史乃至整个世界文化史上都可以彪炳千秋。国外把我国这次修志比喻为“中国修筑的第二次长城”。可见，本届修志工程之浩大，意义之深远。
