1948年的欧洲满目疮痍,百废待兴。这一年,中断了12年之久的奥运会在伦敦重燃圣火。这是一次新的开始,那些刚刚饱尝了战争之苦的人们在这里领略到友谊的幸福,还有,和平与和解的可能:不少刚刚摆脱殖民统治的国家,也应邀参加了这次盛会;而第二次世界大战策源地的德日两国被剥夺了参赛资格。
In 1948 Europe devastated, overwhelmed. This year, the 12-year-long Olympic Games were rekindled in London by the Olympic Games. This is a new beginning. People who have just suffered the war have a taste of the happiness of friendship here. And the possibility of peace and reconciliation: quite a number of countries that have just emerged from colonial rule were also invited to participate in the event. Germany and Japan, the source of the Second World War, were deprived of their qualifications.
