Quick rupture of a broken water supply line with an ordinary check valve can cause damaging impact pressures. However, slow shut-off with a controlled check valve can reduce the impact pressure to an acceptable level. Since the check valve is an automatic valve, the magnitude of the impact pressure depends on the interaction of the check valve and the feedwater system. This article presents a study of a check valve and feedwater system for pipeline rupture. It can be used to determine the damper volume required to reduce the impact pressure. The model data were compared with those measured in an instrumented pipeline rupture test apparatus and the results of the comparison were discussed.
