文学编辑相对于其他专业的编辑来说具有一定的特殊性。做一个合格的文学编辑,除去具备普通编辑应有的基本职业素质和学养,还应该注意做好以下几个方面的工作。首先要熟知所处时代的文学环境、文学现状,要有一定的理论学术素养,约稿时才能有高度,审稿和编辑加工稿件时才能合理的取舍;还要建立自己的作者队伍,并不断投入精力和情感维护与作者的关系。
