1908年美国将部分庚款归还中国,用于资助中国学生留学美国。1909年游美肄业馆在京招考了第一批留美生,1910年夏游美学务处在各省招考第二批直接留美生的同时,也录取了一定数量的高等科和中等科的学生,准备在清华学堂开学时编为在校生。1911年总共有468名学生经过复试全部合格,这是清华学校最早的一批学生,被称为“灵芝”。这一批所谓“灵芝”生入校后又经严格的甄别,实际在堂肄业的仅329人。这批最早的清华学生的英语教学是如何进行的?本文以日记、回忆和传记资料为基础,尝试从英语教学的角度,就生源和考试、师资与课程、教材与教学方式等方面,对清华学校的早期英语教学的实况做一个初步的分析。
