Background Since March 1990, screening of anti-HCV antibodies has been required for all Canadian blood donations. Because HCV causes chronic asymptomatic hepatitis, in February 1995, the Canadian Red Cross started an HCV retrospective study. Study Design and Methods A total of 1 570 846 blood donations were collected from Quebec Center, Red Cross Canada, between March 1990 and March 1997, of which 3196 blood components contributed by 561 anti-HCV repeat positive donors were sent to hospital. The hospital blood bank director was asked to examine the recipient and return the results to the Quebec center. 109 hospitals surveyed to determine the methodology and source of the retrospective analysis. The Blood Transfusion Unit at Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) presented a standard, publicly available retrospective analysis
