城步苗族自治县的南山,地处湘桂交界处,如今已是享誉全国的牧场。南山的发展,离不开历代南山人的坚守创业,更凝注了开国上将王震的殷切期望和关怀。1934年8月,奉中革军委命令,在任弼时、萧克、王震等人率领下,中国工农红军第六军团9700多人作为长征先遣队,鏖战湘赣,转战粤桂,从广西资源县进入湖南城步。
