浑元乃浑厚、圆满之意。所谓浑元力,则是一种笃实、内整的爆发力,它属于大成拳“内劲”体系的一种特殊形式。笔者在向恩师王选杰先生学拳之前,对浑元力的内涵一直不甚明了。后来,经过先生的讲解、演示,我刻苦研练,终有所得。浑元力实质上也是争力。所谓争力,就是要求几乎在瞬间发出方向相反的两个力。比如前后二争力,当发一个向后的力之后,再利用反弹作用,发一向前的力。由于发出二力的时间差极短,所以从外表上看,仍然是一个力。对于浑元力而言,则是多面争力,即前后、左右、上下的六面争力。根据其发力的特点和作用效果,也可把它叫做振荡力。发浑元力之时,就是几乎同时发出六个方向的力。
