INTRODUCTION There is a very common phenomenon today. Many end-point trials are designed to arrange economic analysis, including collecting information on the use of resources and quality of life during the research process, and using some models to extrapolate later in the study. In fact, such analyses are often supported by funding agencies such as the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the NHS Health Technology Assessment Program. The UKPDS study was designed and started earlier, so initially no economic analysis was explicitly arranged. However, Robert Turner predicted very farsightedly in 1992 that this analysis is very important to the study. He then assembled an economist team (Gray, McGale, Fen) at Oxford Wolfson University to discuss how to design a comprehensive economic analysis and receive funding. Since then, Raikkonen, Leggoods, Bridges and Clark have also entered the group.
