New developments in furnace atmosphere monitoring, heat treatment design and computer control, and the introduction of NITREG gas nitriding technology from Italy, France, Canada, Germany and the United States have also been introduced into the UK. The new process offers a high level of control and repeatability while overcoming many of the perceived deficiencies of current gas nitriding technologies. A large number of applications of the United States automotive industry, such as induction hardening, salt bath carbonitriding and many other traditional technologies, has been replaced by the new technology. The authors review the progress of the technology and its possible impact on the field of surface finishing technology in the United Kingdom.
