福蒂的《欲求之物》一书突破了佩夫斯纳《现代设计的先驱者》的线性撰写设计史的方式,以新的视角来重新思考设计史的建构问题。福蒂关注设计与生产、消费和积累的关系,认为除设计师的因素之外,这些社会因素才是设计史构建的重要内容与设计史研究的意义体现。
The Book of Desires by Forty broke through the linear writing history of design by Pewsner’s Pioneers in Modern Design, rethinking the issue of the design history with a new perspective. Forty paid close attention to the relationship between design and production, consumption and accumulation, and considered that these social factors were the important contents of the design history and the meaning of the study of design history besides the factors of designers.
