Objective To investigate the current status of population characteristics of patients undergoing refractive laser in situ keratomileusis corrected for refractive errors and compare them with the situation 6 years ago. Methods The general data of patients undergoing excimer laser in situ keratomileusis in our hospital from 2003 to 1997 were selected, respectively, and their age, sex, occupation and refractive status were statistically analyzed. Results The average age of patients undergoing LASIK in 2003 was (25.20 ± 6.59) years old, slightly more in men than in women, with an average equivalent spherical scope of (-6.66 ± 3.31) D and occupational distribution as high as 50.73%. The total number of LASIK procedures in 2003 increased more than sixfold compared with that in 1997. The mean equivalent spherical value and occupational composition of LASIK patients in both years were significantly different (t = -2.712, χ2 = 25.117, P <0.05). Conclusion The majority of patients with ametropia undergoing LASIK are young people, mainly those with moderate or high myopia. The students are the largest surgical group. The annual operation volume of LASIK has increased by nearly 40% annually in the past six years.
