油茶是世界四大木本油料树种,也是我国栽培范围最广的木本食用油料树种。茶油是高级保健食用油,以油酸和亚油酸为主的不饱和脂肪酸含量高达90%以上,还含有少量的豆冠酸、亚麻酸和天然维生素。茶油因其特殊的营养成分和诸多保健及药理作用,能与世界优质油——橄榄油相媲美。随着人们生活水平的提高,油茶的市场需求将越来越旺盛。纵览平乐油茶产业的发展现状,笔者认为,建立油茶良种种苗繁育基地非常重要。
