Researchers at the Scripps Research Institute and the University of California, San Diego, have recently found that adenovirus-encoded ribozymes can be used to treat Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) -induced lymphoproliferative disorders. EBV is a member of the herpesvirus family that causes infectious mononucleosis, B cell carcinomas such as Burkitt’s lymphoma, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The virus lurks in the way of B cells in the human body lifetime. Ribozymes are naturally occurring messenger RNA (mRNA) chains that cleave other mRNAs. Since ribozymes bind to specific nucleotide sequences, they are soon to be considered as antisense drugs. The California study released hammerhead ribozyme against EBV nuclear antigen-1 (EBNA-1) using the Rous sarcoma adenovirus. In vitro, ribozymes inhibit EBV-induced cell proliferation and prevent the virus from infecting cells.
