蜡染是一种古老的手工染色显花的方法。对于这一方法的起源,有很多猜测,但大多倾向起源于东方。蜡染在欧洲没有久远的传统。可能在16世纪以后才传入。Batik(英语——蜡染)这个词,即是从印尼语演化而来的(含有指上面画有小圆点的布意思)。近代欧洲有不少人研究它。一些艺术家致力于提倡和推广,使古老的蜡染术有了长足的发展。一些艺术院校还正式把蜡染选为课程。一些有名的服装设计家及室内装潢家,应用蜡染来增强他们的设计与创作的艺术性。如19世纪末,欧洲艺术家努伏和犹近司迪、美洲艺术家路易蒂芬纳同时开始复兴蜡防,用于工艺品及高级服装。
Batik is an ancient method of hand-dyed flowers. There is much speculation about the origin of this method, but most tend to originate in the East. Batik in Europe has no long tradition. It may not be introduced after the 16th century. The term Batik (English-batik) evolved from Indonesian (with the meaning of a cloth with dots on it). Many people in modern Europe study it. Some artists devote themselves to promoting and popularizing the ancient batik art. Some art colleges have also officially chosen batik as a course. Some well-known fashion designers and interior designers, the use of batik to enhance the design and creation of their artistry. At the end of the nineteenth century, European artists Nuvo and Judge Siddi and American artist Louis Tiefena also began to rejuvenate paraffin wax for arts and crafts and high-end clothing.
