Currently, there are two main types of gastric cancer staging methods: one is the protocol for the treatment of gastric cancer in Japan. The first version was established in 1962 and has undergone several revisions. The 13th edition was published in 1998 (the second edition in English); the other is the international anti-cancer alliance. The TNM staging program developed by the Union Internationale Contre le Cancer (UICC) was revised to the fifth edition in 1997. This article mainly introduces the UICC 1997 TNM staging method.
