卡莱尔的思想经历了由激进而保守之演变过程。本文分析了这一变化的内在因素,并探讨了卡莱尔思想悖论性背后的文化内涵。文章认为,卡莱尔试图通过“工作福音”来达到社会安定,并从伦理的高度要求作为个体的人通过工作达到内心的完美从而拯救维多利亚社会的道德堕落,这一思想充满了浪漫主义色彩。但是,应该看到的是,卡莱尔对潜在的社会混乱、矛盾和荒谬具有超前的洞察力,从这个意义上来说,他是一位具有现代意识的伟大作家。
Carlisle’s thought went through a radical and conservative evolution. This article analyzes the internal factors of this change and explores the cultural connotations behind the paradox of Carlisle. The article holds that Carlisle tries to achieve social stability through “Gospel of Job”, and from the ethical level, it requires the individual as an individual to achieve inner perfection through work so as to save the moral degeneration of Victorian society. This thought is full of romanticism. However, it should be noted that Carlisle has advanced foresight in view of potential social chaos, contradictions and absurdities. In this sense, he is a great writer with modern consciousness.
