Epiplakin (EPPK), a new member of the plakin family, is a scaffold-binding protein that is an autoantigen found in the serum of patients with sub-cutaneous vesicular disease. It is expressed in both human and mouse tissues, but not identical in gene and molecular structure. EPPK is widely distributed and expressed in both monolayer and stratified epithelium, mainly in liver, pancreas, small intestine, colon and other tissues. In vitro experiments show that EPPK is closely related to intermediate filaments, especially keratin. The study found that EPPK gene associated with retinal development, but also as a marker of pancreatic progenitor cells and liver progenitor cells.
