棉田冬季贮水灌溉,可以积贮大量水分,保证来年适时播种,而且使棉苗在现蕾前也能获得水分的供应。因此,冬灌过的棉田,棉株生育期提早,产量能显著提高。黄河流域棉区、辽河流域棉区及西北内陆棉区,冬、春季雨雪少,春季蒸发量大。如黄河流域棉区的广大地区,1—3月间平均降雨量仅20毫米左右,而同期蒸发量竟达250毫米以上,相差约12倍之多。因此在上述各地区如不进行贮水灌溉,常会因土壤水分不足,直接影响到棉花不能及时播种,或出苗不整齐。棉区群众反映:“冬灌保墒好,地(?)苗旺”,就是这个道理。长江流域棉区及华南棉区,冬、春季雨水较黄河流域棉区为多,但在一熟制栽培地区和盐碱地区也应注意及时地耕作保墒。
