泼水节傣语叫做“愣贺桑堪比迈”(意为新年佳节)。由于新年佳节来临之时,傣家人要举行隆重的泼水活动,人们便把傣族的新年佳节称为泼水节。傣族的新年佳节的节期,在傣历的六月下旬(公历的四月12日至14日)。年节的举庆时间一般为三天,第一天称为“梅或梅多桑堪”(意为年节到来之日,似农历的出夕);第二天叫“脑或晚脑”(意为空日);第三天叫“梅帕雅晚玛”(意为新年来临之日或称之为元旦)。节日期间,傣家人不仅要沐浴更衣、杀猪宰
