In 1979, the World Health Organization (WHO) took the opportunity of the Ninth International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9) to unify the definitions of terms related to perinatal period (perinatal period). In order to compare perinatal statistics around the world, there must be a uniform definition of terms and statistics. Japan first responded to the vital statistics from the same year on the basis of the unified terminology and definitions set by the WHO. Subsequently, the Japanese Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Japanese women) and Japan Maternal Protection Association (Japan mother) have also adopted this unified terminology and definitions. However, the countries in the world are not completely in line with the paces of ICD-9. Even those in the advanced countries have not yet taken such actions.
