As the most important republic of the Soviet Union, the superior geographical position has made Ukraine the most important natural gas transportation country between Russia and Europe. The natural gas from Russia’s land is transported to Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Turkey. Ukraine is a Soviet-era heavy industrial base and a major producer of primary industry and agricultural products. However, the status of Ukraine now has undergone a tremendous change. After 2000, with the tense energy supply situation in the world, natural gas became the most favorable diplomatic weapon in Russia’s hands. Since Russia’s gas exports to Europe rely almost entirely on pipelines, and most of the pipelines pass through Ukraine. This makes Ukraine of great significance to the whole of Europe.
