北京语音成为汉民族共同语的标准音是“学者主张、群众运动、政府确认”的结果，也是社会历史的必然选择。综观整个二十世纪的讨论，最终基本达成共识，即近代汉语共同语标准音就是以《中原音韵》为代表的语音系统，《中原音韵》所反映的语音体系是现代汉民族共同语的直接源头。以《中原音韵》的音系为基点，向上追溯其语音发展的渊源联系，向下推衍其发展流向，也就可以理清近代汉语共同语语音发展的历史脉络，同时也为新世纪的推普工作提供了历史依据和学术依据。
