高更,后期印象派巨匠之一,母亲秘鲁人,幼年沦落到南美,长大当了海员,成年漂泊在海上,后来他虽定居在巴黎从事证券交易,但仍时常怀念南国风光与太平洋地区诸岛的异国情调,终于弃家出走,隐居在南太平洋塔希提岛的土著居民之中,画了许多表现他们生活的画幅。他摒弃了摸拟光色的局限,以夸张、强烈、概括而独树一帜,画面具有浓郁的东方艺术趣味。 这是一幅高更晚年的作品。那深蓝的海,远处张帆驶来的船,简陋的农舍座落在田园的深处,土红的大地上半裸着的农妇,使整个画面处在宁静、欢乐之中。高更追求的“返回自然人”的幻觉境界在这造型世界中获得了完美的表现。
