在安徽当涂县境北部,大片露出之白垩纪火山杂岩内,常夾数层似层状之铁质(赤铁矿,磁铁矿,褐铁矿等)凝灰岩,而在铁质凝灰岩层内又夾有致密状赤铁矿体群,由于单个矿体较小,赋存的规律又较复杂,一响不引人注意.自从党提出今年要把钢铁产量翻—翻的任务以后,群众的积极性大为鼓舞,普遍采掘这种矿石,进行土法冶炼,因而提高了这种矿石的经济意义.这种铁矿床的形成与火山喷发及沉积作用有直接关系,因此,笔者暂名之为“火山堆积铁矿”.本文拟就这种矿床的特征,成矿条件及找矿标志等略述如下.
