But there’s more: it is the fun of solving it. Playing a crossword can crowd the tip of your tongue1. You know that you know the answers, but the words just won’t come out. Then, when you’ve given up and moved on to another clue, comes the blessed relief. The elusive answer suddenly occurs to you, crystal clear.
(Crossword puzzles are a little like spider webs; each answer is connected to the others nearby to form a woven network of letters.)。Tugging on one string of letters affects all the others, too.2 它可能会给你提示,也可能会否定你绞尽脑汁才想出来的答案。 It isn’t for the faint hearts.
Word squares go back to ancient times—a word square was found in the Roman ruins of Pompeii3. Word squares are difficult to compose—the really satisfactory 10-letter word square has yet to be devised4 by either person or computer. In 19th-century England, word squares had become the basis for primitive crossword puzzles for children, sometimes with pictures as clues or with an educational slant.5 Adults didn’t do them until the New York World’s word-cross in 1913.
