1992年从部队退役后,放弃国家分配的工作,回到家乡当农民。1993年3月担任村副主任兼水泥厂常务副厂长。1995年7月,因工作政绩突出,被人事部门录用为国家干部,同年晋升为经济师。1996年底当选为村支部书记兼水泥厂厂长、昌华实业总公司董事长。多次被上级有关部门评为“先进工作者”、“模范共产党员”和“省优秀乡镇企业家”称号。——他就是被群众称为“企业领头雁,致富带路人”的耒阳市灶市村支部书记、灶市水泥厂厂长贺尊彪。
