自清道光、咸丰年间浅绛彩兴起,便成为其釉上彩瓷的主要装饰形式。而随着时间的推移,其彩瓷工艺的缺陷渐渐显现出来:一是由于浅绛彩色料单薄,粘接不够牢固,色泽不鲜亮,色域也没有粉彩宽广丰富,而不能满足收藏者的购买心理需要;二是由于当时的陈设瓷、日用瓷、嫁妆瓷全用浅绛装饰,毫无新意;三是民国瓷画家更喜好中国画工笔重彩或更擅长工兼写之法在瓷上作画。因此,色彩更为丰富,而画趣、花意却相同的粉彩,取代盛行一时的浅绛彩。浅绛彩从诞生到衰亡约70余年。但浅绛彩瓷绘艺术因其具有鲜明的时代特点和别开生面的突出艺术成就脱颖而出,如何正确、深入地认识其在美术史和瓷绘艺术史上传承与再生,正是关于浅绛彩绘研究的空白点。
