Recently, Chinese scientists successfully cloned a salt-tolerant key gene from a halophyte and introduced many kinds of plants. This will make it possible to turn saline land, which accounts for about a quarter of the Earth’s total land area, into an oasis. The group led by two professors, Zhao Yanxiu and Zhang Hui, from Shandong Normal University started the study from 1999 and found this gene after determining the sequence of 1755 “Suaeda salsa” genes and found that
