On the 40th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan, on January 3, 2012, four members of Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan boarded the Diaoyu Islands to declare their sovereignty and set off a new wave of Sino-Japanese relations. On January 29, the Japanese government announced that it has tentatively named some islands around the Diaoyu Islands. It plans to finalize its official name during the year and mark it on the map of Japan. This is reminiscent of December 2010 Ishigaki City Council adopted the January 14 as the so-called “Senkaku Islands (Note: the Diaoyu Islands) to open up” regulations. All this shows that with the advent of the era of large-scale exploitation and utilization of marine resources, the dispute between China and Japan over the maritime rights and interests of the East China Sea, especially the sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands, is intensifying.
