In the history of British literature, the “Victoria” era (1837-1901) was a period of flourishing writing and writers, with hundreds of writers of various sizes. George Robert Gissing (1857-1903) was one of the last remarkable novelists. He was 46 and lived shorter than any major novelist in the nineteenth century (except for Austin and the Bronte sisters), but he was a prolific writer who, over the course of his 23 years of literary career, He created 23 novels, 1111 short stories, a travel magazine, a Dickens review monograph, and a large number of essays. Quantitatively, he has more works than any of the nineteenth-century leading writers except Scitec and Truro. Among the many such works, “... include as many as fourteen best-of-the-art productions: twelve novels, one travel magazine and one Dickens review monograph.” It is indeed rare for a writer to write fourteen excellent works. No wonder Arnold Bennett, a well-known British literary critic, calls Geithing “a well-deserved realist writer and an important novelist of the nineteenth century.”
