Toyo Engineering has developed a decarbonization process for the upgrading of heavy oil - the High Conversion Tower Cracking (HSC) process, which reforms heavy oil by thermal cracking plus deep steam stripping. The conversion rate is between viscosity reduction and coking. The HSC cracking reactor operates at stripping steam at near atmospheric pressure while recovering the high boiling point product oil at the cracking temperature by flash distillation. No vacuum distillation column is required to recover heavy gas oil from cracked residue.
