A subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom has developed a fundamentally new structure, the so-called ISAD (Integral Starter-Alternator-Damper). The connotation of this acronym indicates a real revolution in the automotive industry. As with the usual electric motors, the working principle of this new device is also based on the electromagnetic field forces. However, the flywheel itself acts as a starter-generator rotor (of course there is no usual ring gear) around which the stator windings are placed.
