瑤族沒有本民族的文字。他們在未借用汉字时,在社会活动中,曾創造了各种記事方式,以帮助記忆。瑤族古代曾經使用过“刻木記事”的方式。史書謂之“木契”,瑤族自称“打木格”。《岭外代答》記述宋代广西灵川县瑤族的“木契”样式:在一塊横直約一尺見方的木板上,左边刻一大痕,表示“我”;右边刻一大痕,表示“县官”;两者之間划条直綫連接起来,并在左边大痕之下再刻一大痕及数十个小痕,表示“仇人带来几十个人”,板的中間刻一支箭形,表示“用箭射”,又用火燒一塊小
