In China, the study of expansive soils has been conducted for more than 10 years. The “Technical Regulations” prepared in 1978 reflect the intermediate results. On this basis, it has extensively drawn domestic and foreign research materials, and began drafting the national standard “Construction Technical Specifications for Expansive Soils” in 1983 and passed the ministerial review in 1985. The “Specifications” regulates the engineering characteristics of expansive soil and test methods. They include the free expansion rate of soil, the pressure of 50 Kpa and the expansion rate under different pressures, as well as the indexes of contraction coefficient and expansion force. These indoor test indicators reflect the hydrophilicity and swelling and shrinking potential of expansive soil minerals. They are mainly used for expansive soils.
