We are accustomed to distingUishing between “self-study”and “learn from the teacher”in terms of different ways of learning. However, this kind of differentiation prevents us from seeing the nature of learning. Any type of learning is self-governing by nature. The learner is expected to take personal responsibility for his or her own learning. One can hardly learn anything if one only repeats the teacher’s words without learning independently. But due to the traditional way of thinking, the “learnt from the teacher”node is considered superior, the teacher having received professional training, while the “self-taught”mode is considered inferior, belonging to the second rate. It has got to the point where we must break with this fallacy. We cannot bring the spoon-fed model of learning into the 21st century.“Self-study” requires certain qualities from the learner, such as self-confidence, self-management,self-discipline, effective thinking, hard-work, determination, persistence, etc. One more important quality is the ability to handle conflicts between work and study, betWeen self and unit, as well as between self and family. It is not easy to be good at all these when you first start, but it is possible to succeed with your own efforts, plus full and allround learner’s support from the educational institution. The new BA course for English teachers from secondary schools jointly offered by the CRTVU and Beijing Foreign Studies University is specially designed for developing these qualities of independent learning. Read the following heartfelt thoughts and feedback from the learners of the course. They have given the best answer to our discussion.
