人类力量的空虚的光荣啊!他的绿色即使不被粗暴的后代超过,也在那枝头驻得多么短促啊!契马布埃想在绘画上立于不败之地,可是现在得到彩声的是乔托,因此那另一个的名声默默无闻了。——但丁《神曲·炼狱篇》这是但丁眼中的乔托。人们常说但丁是中世纪最后一位诗人,是新时代最初的一位诗人。那么乔托恰恰就是兼具中世纪终结者与新时代开创者的一位画家。虽然乔托一生既是雕塑家、画家,又是建筑家,但是笔者更愿意用画家这个身份来描述他。因为无论他创作了什么样的作品,都如同一个绘画者在用自己的画笔勾勒自然与人的美好,是他用自己的画笔将神从圣坛上解放,进入了人的时代。
