近年来,国内外学术界对家庭的研究工作十分活跃.许多国家经常召开家庭学学术讨论会,大量出版家庭学书刊,在大学里开设家庭学课程.不少国家还设家庭法院,政府中有家庭部.一些国际组织,也多次举办有关家庭问题的讲习班和讨论会.这些都说明,一门新的社会科学——家庭学正在蓬勃兴起.以往对家庭理论的研究,都没有超出传统社会科学研究的范围.国外最早起源于十九世纪的家庭学,主要研究家庭的衣、食、住、行,旨在对家庭成员进行生活教育.以后在二十世纪三十年代建立起来的家庭社会学,研究的范围和理论深度都大大超过了家政学.它把家庭结构的研究科学化,不仅回答“怎么力、”,还回答“为什么”.而从现在开始兴起的家庭学,研究的则是家庭起源、演化及未来的趋势.这些对家庭研究的内容,虽然源于社会学,但又超出了社会学研究的范围.由于哲学、政治学、法学、历史学、心理学、伦理学、教育学、未来学、神学、医学、数学等许多学科对家庭研究的介入,也由于现代新的科技革命对家庭的影响和冲击,家庭学已引起各国的普遍重视.
