The Hungarian government plans to reform the national health insurance system and strives to introduce it on January 1, 2001. This reform will end the monopoly of the National Common Medical Fund (OEP) and make the country’s health insurance system more competitive. Private funds will be given some rules for entering the medical insurance system. At present, private funds are only used as supplementary insurance. The reform, which has now been submitted to the Diet Medical Board, allows three or four smaller national medical funds in each region to be contracted and contracts with hospital doctors.
