箴言书院藏书的目的,是让院内外愿读书者“领读”其书。为方便读者,胡林翼编纂(胡氏身后又有补充)了《箴言书院藏书目录》。此目载于《箴言书院志》卷中,计八十一页,占全《志》篇幅的一半以上,著录藏书1,335部(种)31,738卷,可以视为箴言书院之“馆藏目录”。胡林翼对《四库全书总目》极为推崇,曾谓“四库全书目录,经史子集,体用兼资”(《致汪梅村》)。因而所编藏书目录之体例多依法四库而又有所变通。它们都采取部、类、属三级分类法,《库目》共分四部四十四类六十三属,《院目》共五部五十四类三十六属。以经史子集四部而论,《院目》基本上是依照《库目》成规稍作变通而后类归藏书的。其变通情况,可以归纳
