在包装设计课程的教学中,教学工作者们最经常碰到的问题就是课程边界与范畴的界定;而现代包装设计,因为商业社会的迅速发展而导致的相关科学技术的变革,使物品的交易跨越了时间和空间的限制实现资源的全球共同分配,因此包装对于物品的保护、储存、运输和促销等属性必须与之相关要求进行对应和匹配。鉴于此,设计者必须多角度的去考虑和实现这些对应与匹配的效力,以及相关技术的支持和综合建构这种措施的逻辑与评判标准;因为现代社会的商业需求及工业发展,包装设计已经介入到产品制造的核心里面,成为产品设计的价值判断的前提与重要标准,在多数情况下,符合现代商业规律和工业标准的产品设计和包装设计其实互为因果,因此现代设计教育对于包装设计的认知与教学应该被置于一个宽泛的、复合型的架构里面活动与发展,而对于设计学科的理解与建构也需要建立在对于整个设计世界的认识基础上来完成。
