In Hittite society, singers formed an important group among cult functionaries, music being an indispensable part of religious activities, particularly of various festivals. There were several kinds of singers, e.g. MUNUSzintuhi, MUNUSKLSIKIL, LUSIRI,LUzinhure. Among them, MUNUSzintuhi and MUNUSKLSIKIL are those functioning in festivals throughout all Hittite history. Both words mean “young girl” (respectively in Hattic and in Sumerian) and have similar functions in festivals. So, according to some scholars, they may have denoted one and the same type of female functionaries. But since the phonetical reading of MUNUSKLSIKIL is unknown, there still remains some doubt whether the latter is identical with MUNUSzintuhi. The present article is aimed at investigating the data available so as to determine the position and the functions of MUNUSzintuhi and MUNUSKLSIKIL among other participants in religious activities.
