Some researchers at Bell Labs, Corning Incorporated and Japan’s Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. are exploring sealed carbon coatings as a new type of fiber protection. This coating is believed to prevent the penetration of water vapor and hydrogen. In the general environment, well-designed fiber optic cables, of which optical fibers, usually maintain their strength and good transmission performance over many years of operation. However, diffusion of hydrogen into the glass causes additional absorption. Even a small amount of steam accelerates fiber fatigue, reducing the ability of the fiber to withstand high strains such as severe bending. According to Paul J. Lemaire of Bell Labs, if the fiber is exposed to some underwater system or well sensing
