公园对于一个城市来说,就是一处让市民休息、喘一口气的地方。环顾不少公园却往往有以下特征:过度管理、人工化规划、拥挤的园景空间、充斥莫名其妙的设备,反而最重要而又应该是最基本的花草树木,不是品种单调,就是种得稀疏……到底一个怎么样的公园才最理想?香港开埠后建设的首个维多利亚式花园——动植物公园,是首个与众同乐的公共花园,今年已踏入第一百二十九个年头。园内的独特处,是种植了超过一千多种植物,从百年古树、珍稀亚热带植物、常见乔木,以至各国的花草灌木都应有尽有,从远处看,有如一个玻璃之城上的小森林,在园中散步,被油油绿意和鸟语花香自然地围绕着,空气清新,风景怡人……这个优美的花园,更是后来启发香港政府在港岛中部铜锣湾兴建维多利亚公园的“缪思”。这一次,我们尝试从昔日文献、旧照片以及此时此刻的园中景况入手,看看这个静静地隐处香港岛上的百年公园,有什么实际意义,又带来了什么启示。
