拙译《福尔摩斯探案全集》梓行以来,部分读者似乎对第一部福尔摩斯小说的译名“暗红习作”(这部小说的英文原题是A Study in Scarlet,曾有译名之一是“血字的研究”)有所不解,在此略述其中缘由,供读者诸君参考。在A Study in Scarlet第四章的末尾,富于艺术气质的主角福尔摩斯亲口解释了这个书名的由来:“……咱们就叫它A Study in Scarlet,怎么样?用那么一点儿艺术词藻(”艺术词藻“的原文是art jargon),我看也无伤大雅。
Since the publication of the book ”The Complete Collection of Sherlock Holmes“, some readers seem to have criticized the translation of the first Sherlock novel ”Dark Crimson“ (A Study in Scarlet ”Study of blood words “) puzzled, here outlined the reasons for your reference readers. At the end of the fourth chapter of A Study in Scarlet, Sherlock Holmes, the artistically tempered protagonist, explained the origin of the title himself: ”... let’s call it A Study in Scarlet, how? “Art Phrase ” is the original art jargon), I see no harm.
