In recent years, technological advances in production and the rapid development of electronic media have led to a sharp drop in the demand for newsprint. Global newsprint production continued to decline in 2014, a decrease of over 1.5% from 2013 and a reduction of about 20 million tons. The newsprint market is experiencing its toughest times, with overcapacity in most newsprint production plants in Europe and the United States and under-utilization of paper machines, forcing all pulp and paper producers to find new ways to survive.
