IF you ask the average young Beijinger to list the most fashionable TV serials in China today, the answer is unlikely to feature domestic titles. Some of the programs may not have even been aired by local television stations. Big-budget U.S. TV dramas like 24 and Prison Break are undoubtedly the hottest ticket amongst China’s youth. But while earlier series like The Hunter and Growing Pains were disseminated via conventional broadcasts, more recent programs like CSI (Crime Scene Investigation), Heroes, and Desperate Housewives have captured much of their Chinese audience via quite different means.
