The Amsterdam Hotel is an indispensable center for the early modern Dutch trade structure. They have many economic functions: hoteliers provide credit and transportation services to their foreign guests, act as guarantors and receive bills of exchange. In the 16th century a group of German hoteliers joined international trade, but in the ensuing centuries fewer hoteliers and agents were grouped together. However, the hotelier continues to provide assistance to business guests. In addition to providing warehousing and transportation, meeting space and credit guarantee services, some hoteliers are also intermediaries between foreign and local merchants. Some hotels also hold auctions that attract brokers, businessmen and the general public. Hotels lost their appeal in the 19th century and professional agencies such as hotels, restaurants, trading houses, auction houses and transport companies took over these economic functions.
